Japanese-inspired tattoo designs
Japanese-inspired tattoos use a strong main subject and a composition that follows the body. A koi, dragon, mask or guardian figure can become the focal point, with flowers, waves and other background shapes helping connect the design. The gallery includes completed work with koi, masks, flowing backgrounds and larger arm compositions.
Planning your design
Start with the subject that interests you and the placement you have in mind. Tell us whether you prefer black and gray, color, an individual piece or a design that can grow into a sleeve. Reference images help explain your preferred mood and composition; the consultation is the place to discuss an original design that fits your body.
For a sleeve, let your artist know about existing tattoos and any areas you want to leave open. Planning the background and main subjects together can help the whole piece flow. Bring clear photos of the entire area so the artist can consider the elbow, wrist, shoulder and the way the design will look from different angles.
Size, detail and sessions
Large masks, scales, petals and background patterns need enough room to read clearly. Your artist can discuss a suitable size and explain which details to simplify for a smaller piece. A full sleeve or large composition may need several appointments. The number and length of sessions depend on the design, placement and the work involved.
Japanese tattoo questions
Can I choose black and gray instead of color?
Yes. Bring examples of the contrast and shading you like, and tell us if you want any color accents. Your artist will discuss the design options during the consultation.
Can you build a sleeve around an existing tattoo?
Send photos of the current tattoo and the surrounding area. The artist needs to review the space before recommending how a new subject or background could connect with the existing work.
How much will my tattoo cost?
Send your subject, approximate size, placement and reference images. We will review the idea and explain the estimate and next steps. A photograph in the gallery does not set a fixed price for a new design.
Can I walk in for a consultation?
Rock Bottom Tattoo Studio welcomes walk-ins in downtown San Diego, with tattoo work subject to artist availability. Larger compositions benefit from a consultation and a planned appointment.
