What Is Tattoo Flash? How to Choose from a Sheet
Tattoo flash is artwork prepared in advance for someone to choose as a tattoo. A flash sheet groups several designs together, making it easier to compare ideas before talking with an artist. Choosing flash gives you a starting design; the artist still needs to assess its size, placement and suitability for your visit.
At Rock Bottom Tattoo, the Friday the 13th preview collection offers a useful place to start. Treat it as a way to explore your taste and prepare questions, rather than a promise that every pictured piece is available.
Start with the design, then the details
Look at the whole silhouette before zooming into the smallest details. Would you choose the design without its caption or the other artwork around it? Notice whether you prefer a simple outline, a dark shape or a more detailed illustration. Saving two or three favorites can make that preference easier to explain.
A screenshot should include the complete design. If you crop it out of a sheet, keep an uncropped copy too, so the team can identify the artwork. A sheet or release name is also helpful when several designs look similar.
Discuss size and placement together
Describe your preferred size in inches and name the placement. Saying “small” leaves room for very different interpretations. For example, an idea for a two-inch design on an ankle gives the artist more information than “a tiny one somewhere on my leg.”
Ask which details would need to change at that size. If the artist recommends more space, discuss the reasons before deciding. The stencil is your opportunity to look at the proposed scale and position and ask questions before tattooing begins.
Flash and custom work follow different paths
Choosing existing artwork and requesting a new drawing are different requests. Changing a character, combining two designs or adding lettering may require a separate discussion. Ask what changes are possible and whether they affect pricing or availability.
For Rock Bottom’s Friday the 13th event, limited small custom requests require coordination and a deposit before an appointment is confirmed. Sending an idea alone does not reserve a time. Use the current event page for that process.
Bring a backup and confirm the price
The event gallery is a preview, and the final event selection may differ. Save a backup you would actually be happy wearing. Confirm the selected design, placement and total price with the team before proceeding. Ask whether any offer applies to that exact selection.
One final question is useful: is this design repeatable or intended for one client? Flash availability and repeat policies can vary, so let the artist explain the arrangement for the artwork you choose.
Choose your starting point
Browse the collection, save a few clear references and bring your size and placement questions. The goal is a design you understand and feel comfortable choosing.
